The God Who Stopped Whispering
Hebrews 1:1-4 NIV
In the past God spoke to our ancestors through the prophets at many times and in various ways, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed heir of all things, and through whom also he made the universe. The Son is the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being, sustaining all things by his powerful word. After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty in heaven. So he became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs.
For centuries, God spoke in fragments; a burning bush here, a prophet’s warning there, a dream in the night, a law carved in stone.
Hebrews 1:1 calls it “many times and in many ways.” It was real, but it was scattered. And a bit like trying to piece together a jigsaw puzzle when you've only ever seen the corners.
Then everything changed when Jesus, God’s final word entered our world.
This wasn’t a new message to be added to the old ones; rather it was the message himself who came and stood in the room! God didn’t send a memo. He sent his Son,
“In these last days he has spoken to us by his Son” (V2)
Jesus is the exact imprint.
Verse 3 of the text says that he is
“the radiance of God’s glory and the exact representation of his being”
Think of a coin pressed into hot wax, every detail is perfectly transferred. So, if you want to know what God is like, look at Jesus. Rather than trying to see the immortal, invisible, immutable God who most of the time stands ‘set apart’ like a vague distant idea, and instead look to Jesus, a real living and breathing person, the only Son of God!
Jesus holds it all together.
He is “sustaining all things by his powerful word” (V3). Jesus is the same voice that spoke galaxies into existence and still speaks today. He keeps atoms in their orbits, hearts beating, seasons turning. Nothing falls apart on his watch!
Rejoice for Jesus finished what we couldn’t.
“After he had provided purification for sins, he sat down” (V3).
You know, in the Old Testament, priests never sat down, simply because their work was never done. But Jesus sat down because the job was complete. No more striving. No more distance. Job Done”
He is greater than the angels.
The original readers were tempted to treat angels as the ultimate messengers.
Verse 4 says that Jesus
“became as much superior to the angels as the name he has inherited is superior to theirs”
Angels merely point, but Jesus is the point!
God’s loudest word is a person! If you’ve seen Jesus, you’ve seen enough.
And He sat down so that we could stand up!
Angels deliver messages. Jesus is the message!
Where does this lands for us in real life?
We don’t have to wonder if God is still speaking. He has already said everything that ever needs to be said in Jesus.
That means, when we feel distant from God, we need to stop waiting for a new sign; and return to the Son he already gave.
When it feels like you’re trying to hold the world together, remind yourself that you’re not and that He is!
When guilt whispers that you haven’t done enough, remind yourself that Jesus sat down. His work was complete, granting us perfect and complete forgiveness. So relaz, you are an aopted daughter or son of the Almighty!
The God who once spoke in fragments has given you his full, final, living word, Jesus Christ
Look to Him. Listen to Him. Rest in Him.
