Scared of the dark?
When Jesus spoke again to the people, he said, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
John 8:12
This verse is one of my favourites, it sparkles like the precious jewel of Scripture it is. It’s words are so rammed pack full of hope that they're full of deep theological significance for us all. To appreciate its beauty we need to illuminate the setting, the time and place when Jesus said these words. Simply because it helps us understand the cultural background and get the context right. Picturing the scene in our mind also helps.
Jesus spoke these words during the Feast of Tabernacles, a joyful Jewish festival that celebrates and recalls the end of the 40-year period when the nation lived in tents or tabernacles in wilderness! During the feast, enormous golden lamps were lit in the temple courts, so bright in those pre-street light nights, that they cast a brilliant glow over ancient Jerusalem symbolising God’s presence as He guiding Israel as a pillar of fire at night through the wilderness.
it’s at this point during the festival of light, that Jesus makes a staggering declaration to the people. He isn’t merely pointing to some lanterns; He's claiming to be the true, living source of all light, which makes the timing of His promise deeply personal and immediate!
Let’s unpack this a bit more, for when Jesus calls Himself the "light of the world," He offers a threefold, uplifting promise for each of our our lives today.
Firstly, Light as Truth and Clarity:
In today’s world that’s often filled with confusion, moral grey areas, and competing voices professing varients of truth, Jesus offers us the light of divine truth! Now let’s get one thing clear, saying that we follow Him doesn't mean we have all the answers, but it does mean that we have Him as a clear, reliable beacon that guides our lives. His teachings and the way He lived His life illuminate the path of love, integrity, and purpose, clearing away the fog of uncertainty that exists in todays world!.
Secondly, Light as Life and Vitality:
Jesus doesn’t just give light; He is the "light of life." This connects to the very beginning of creation, when God said, "Let there be light." It’s the same light! Did you ever think of it in that way before?
Jesus is the source of a new creation within us, which isn't just about existence; it's about a vibrant, flourishing, eternal quality of life that starts the moment we follow Him. It’s the warmth that makes our souls flourish, pushing us to grow, heal, and become who we he truly meant us to be.
Thirdly, Light as Presence and Hope:
I believe that deep down, all of us can be a bit scared of what our minds imagines what lurks in the dark. But the most comforting aspect of light, is that it completely banishes darkness! Now His promise that we "will never walk in darkness" isn't a guarantee that we'll never face dark times, pain, or grief. Rather it’s the profound assurance that in those moments, we are not alone. Remember, darkness cannot overcome the light, and Jesus’s presence is a constant, a steady flame within us, offering guidance when we can’t see our next step and reminding us of the hope that dawn is always coming!
Do you walk in His Light?
The condition to receive this incredible gift is simple: "Whoever follows me" that’s it! There's no demand to jump through a series of increasingly difficult hoops in order to become perfect, rather it’s an invitation to begin a journey, to start a daily, step-by-step choice to turn our gaze toward Jesus, to learn from Him, and to trust in His direction.
Think of it this way: none of us can instantly becomea perfect vessel, but we can be a window! When we follow Jesus, when we position our lives with His, then His light can simply shine through us. In doing this not only do we brighten our own path but we bring warmth to those around us. Our purpose becomes less about striving to become good, and more about reflecting the love and hope that already exists in the person of Jesus!
